SunSITE was established in 1992 as an experimental program at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offering a digital "collection of collections," featuring a diverse range of publicly available information and open source content, including software, music, literature, art, history, science, politics, and cultural studies. In 1997 SunSITE was renamed as MetaLab, and in 2000, MetaLab renamed as ibiblio.
