Lawyer and businessman of Edgefield and Aiken Counties, S.C.; commissioner in charge of construction of new State House in Columbia, S.C., 1855-1861; editor of "Edgefield Advertiser"; served as captain during Seminole War; Adjutant and Inspector General of S.C.; served as Colonel in the 14th S.C. Regt., and Quartermaster General of S.C., during the Civil War.
Owner of Vaucluse Manufacturing Company near Aiken, S.C.; director, secretary, and treasurer of Graniteville Manufacturing Company, Aiken, S.C., founded by his brother-in-law, William Gregg (1800-1867).
