New York (State). Dept. of Public Instruction. Office of the Superintendent.
The authority to issue certificates entitling teachers to teach in any common school was conferred on the Superintendent of Public Instruction upon creation of that office in 1854. In 1875, examination was made a requirement for certification by the Superintendent.
