Lehman, William, 1913-2005
Variant namesWilliam M. Lehman (October 5, 1913 – March 16, 2005) was an American automobile dealer, educator, and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he notably served as the U.S. Representative from Florida's 13th (1973-1983) and 17th (1983-1993) districts.
Born in Selma, Alabama, he was educated at Dallas Academy and Selma High School before earning a B.S. degree from the University of Alabama; he was later educated at Oxford University. Lehman worked as an automobile dealer from 1936 to 1972, as a teacher at Miami Norland Junior High School from 1963 to 1964, and an instructor at Miami-Dade Junior College from 1965 to 1966. He was a member of the Dade County School Board from 1966 to 1972, serving as its chairman from 1971 to 1972.
He was a member of the Miami-Dade County School Board from 1966 to 1972, and was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-third and to the nine succeeding Congresses, serving from January 3, 1973 to January 3, 1993. He was not a candidate for renomination to the One Hundred Third Congress in 1992. Serving as chair of the Miami-Dade county transportation subcommittee, he helped create the Metrorail and Tri-Rail systems. Other work includes the assisted creation of the trauma care center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Lehman died in 2005 in Miami Beach, Florida.
