Hide Profile

The Jewish Armed Services Committee of Baltimore began in 1941 as a joint venture of the Jewish Welfare Board and the United Service Organizations (USO) during World War II. After the war ended, a group of Baltimore women formed the Hospital Services Committee and served veterans at the Perry Point and Fort Howard Veterans Administration hospitals. In 1963, the USO reduced the funding for local Jewish Armed Services organizations and the Baltimore Jewish Armed Services Committee was terminated as a Jewish Welfare Board entity. Since the Jewish Armed Services Committee was an active organization and continued to provide much needed services, the Associated Jewish Charities and Welfare Board began to support the organization, and the Jewish Armed Services Committee became an agency of the AJCWB, now The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore. It continues its partnership with the Associated as a part of Jewish Family Services. The goal of the Jewish Armed Services Committee is to plan and execute social, religious and cultural activities for Jewish servicemen and servicewomen stationed at local military bases. The JASC supports the military chaplains with volunteer support, kosher food preparations, and holiday planning and also serves as a liaison to military commanders, post chaplains, special service officers, service club personnel, and various veterans' organizations.
