Mary Lula Williams was born in 1915 or 1916 to Mr. and Mrs. J.P. (James Polk) Williams and grew up in Paris, Texas, where she graduated from Paris High School in 1934. She attended Southern Methodist University from 1934-1938, where she majored in Latin, English, and German, and was involved in Sigma Kappa Sorority, Mortar Board, and was a Rotunda Beauty. She was also a member of Highland Park Methodist Church during her college years, and attended the Methodist Assembly at Mt. Sequoyah in Fayetteville, Arkansas during her high school and college summers. In 1940 she married John Edwin Fleming who also attended SMU where he was a member of Blue Key and Cycen Fjodr, and was Vice-President of the Student Body. The couple lived in Dallas, Texas; Mary Lula taught English at Deport High School in Deport, Texas in 1940 (and possibly beyond), and a few years later they had a baby girl. The couple attended University Park Methodist Church.
