Baptist clergyman; founder of The Rescue Orphanage of South Carolina, subsequently known as Carlile Courtenay Home and Carolina Children's Home, Columbia, S.C.; organized three Baptist churches: Park Street, Colonial Heights, and Shandon, all in Columbia, S.C.; son of William Ashmead (1831-1908) and Julia Anna Francis Courtenay (1837-1918).
