Peter Hynes was born in Great Britain and naturalized as an American citizen in Chatham County, Georgia in 1811. He became a merchant in Savannah. He died in Savannah and was buried in Colonial Park cemetery; he was later reinterred in the Sullivan lot in Lauren Grove Cemetery. James Sullivan married either a daughter or granddaughter of Peter Hynes in 1847. He was a merchant, selling stoves and hardware.
