Giménez, Carlos A. (Carlos Antonio), 1954-
Carlos Antonio Giménez (born January 17, 1954) is a Cuban-born American politician and retired firefighter. A member of the Republican Party, he has served as the U.S. Representative for Florida's 26th congressional district since 2021.
Born in Havana, Cuba, his family immigrated to the United States in 1960, settling in Miami, Florida. He graduated from Columbus High School in Miami Shores before beginning his journey of public service in 1975 when he joined the City of Miami Fire Department. There, he embarked on a 25-year career as a firefighter in his community, with the last nine years of his tenure as Chief of the department. In 1993, he completed the Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and earned a B.P.A. from Barry University in Miami in 1999.
From May 2000 to January 2003, Giménez served as city manager of Miami proper, appointed by then mayor Joe Carollo. In 2004, he was elected as a Miami-Dade County Commissioner for the county's 7th district, beating former Mayor of Miami and, eventual successor, Xavier Suarez. Giménez was elected mayor of the metropolitan government of Miami-Dade County, Florida on June 28, 2011, in the 2011 Miami-Dade County mayoral special election. Giménez was re-elected to full four-year terms in 2012 and 2016.
In January 2020, Giménez announced he was running for the Republican nomination in the 2020 U.S. House election for Florida's 26th congressional district. Aided by Donald Trump's strong showing in the district, Giménez won the general election against incumbent Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. In the 117th Congress, he serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, the Homeland Security committee, and the Science, Space, and Technology Committee. Giménez is also a part of the Freedom Force Caucus.
