Daughter of New York City merchant John Murray (1737-1808) and Hannah Lindley Murray (d. 1839). Mary Murray was an accomplished linguist and, working in collaboration with her sister Hannah, is known to have composed or assisted in several translations of literary works from the Italian, French, and Latin.
