William Murl McMurtry was born on May 4, 1934 in Enid, Oklahoma. McMurtry served in the U.S. Army, and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Oklahoma State University, and a Ph.D. from what is now the University of North Texas. At North Texas, his dissertation committee consisted of Helen Hewitt (chair), Robert W. Ottman, Cecil Adkins, and George Morey. He taught what is now Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, and Oklahoma State University. McMurtry died in Denton, Texas on March 24, 2007.
