Sir Thomas Edward Thorpe, 1884-1925, was Professor of Chemistry at the Yorkshire College from 1874 to 1885, after which he was twice (1885-1894 and 1909-1912) at the Royal College of Science in London. From 1894 to 1909 he worked as a government scientist. He was knighted in 1909.
