Sory Smith (b. 1909, Clarksville, Tenn.-d. Dec. 27, 1996), U.S. Air Force officer, graduated from West Point in 1930 with a commission in the Infantry. After completing pilot training, he transferred to the Air Corps in 1931. In 1941 he was a member of the U.S. Military North African Mission in Cairo, Egypt, and a year later joined the 9th Air Force, serving in Africa, the Middle East, England, and throughout Europe during World War II. After the War he served with the Air Transport Command in Africa and Europe. In 1948 he was appointed executive to the Air Force chief of staff, and the following year became director of public relations in the Office of Public Information and Information Services, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. In the later 1950s, General Smith assumed command of Pacific Air Force (PAF) in Hawaii, then of PAF, Far East Air Force, with added duty as deputy commander, Far East Air Force. In 1957 he was appointed commander, 4th Air Force, Continental Air Command. He retired in 1965.
