Taylor, Haywood Maurice, 1898-1960
Haywood Maurice Taylor (1898-1960) was a toxicologist and biochemist. His studies at The University of North Carolina were interrupted by service in the army during World War I, but following the war he returned to complete his studies, receiving a B.S. degree in 1920, an M.S. in 1921, and a Ph.D. in 1924.
At the University he was an instructor in chemistry and pharmacy, and also taught science at the Chapel Hill High School.
Taylor worked as a research chemist with E.R. Squibb and Sons in New York and as head of the department of chemistry at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Medical School. In 1930 he joined the original staff of the Duke University Medical Center, where he was professor of biochemistry and toxicology.
Widely known as a toxicologist, he served as a consultant to the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation and to the North Carolina Medical Examiners Systems. During World War II he was appointed gas consultant to the state Office of Civilian Defense.
