Joe Lieberman was a Senator from Connecticut. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1988 and re-elected as a Democrat in 1994 and 2000; he ran and was elected as an Independent in 2006. He was the Democratic nominee for Vice President in the 2000 United States presidential election, running with Al Gore, and becoming the first Jewish candidate on a major American political party presidential ticket.
