Norris family.

Hide Profile

These diaries were kept by Isaac Norris (1671-1735) and his son, Isaac Norris (1701-1766), both prominent Philadelphia men. Isaac Norris, Sr. was born in London and emigrated to Jamaica with his parents who sought to escape the religious persecution of Quakers in England. He settled in Philadelphia as a young man and became an eminently successful merchant and a most influential man in the Province of Pennsylvania. He served in the Colonial Assembly and the Provincial Council, was a justice of the courts of Philadelphia, a city alderman, and Mayor of the city for one term.

Norris' son (the sixth of fourteen), in addition to his lucrative association with his father in the mercantile business, was also prominent in colonial affairs. As a statesman, he is remembered for his strong leadership in working to keep the policy of the state consistent with Quaker principles. Among his many political offices, Norris was appointed in 1745 as one of the commissioners to represent Pennsylvania at the Indian conference in Albany. This he noted in his 1745 diary.
