Founded in 1877, through the work of S. Humphreys Gurteen, as Charity Organization Society, the first city-wide relief coordinating agency of its kind in the U.S. Changed name in 1934 to Family Service Society to reflect movement away from relief-giving and toward strengthening the family unit through counseling, outreach, education programs and boarding homes.
