Horace W. Lundberg was born in Kansas and grew up in Utah. Following graduation from Utah State University, he began a career as a teacher and high school administrator. During World War II, he served in the American Red Cross and decided on a career change, the field of social work. He received his Ph. D. in social work from the University of Minnesota in 1957. G. Homer Durham brought him to ASU in 1962 to establish the Graduate School of Social Service Administration. In 1975 an undergraduate program was added and the name changed to the School of Social Work. Horace Lundberg retired in 1977, though he has at times served as lecturer, resource person and has remained an active researcher.
