David Earl Holt was born on May 17, 1928 in Magna, Utah. After growing up in Magna, he attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, earning bachelor's and master's degrees in music, and played trombone in the bands of Tex Beneke, Tony Pastor, Gene Krupa, Victor Lombardo, and Tommy Dorsey. He earned a master's degree in librarianship from Emory University, and served as director of the Alton, Illinois Hayner Public Library from 1963 until 1965 before relocating to work at the Waco Public Library. He then served as director of the Austin Public Library from 1967 to 1991. He was also an active member of the Austin Writers' League, and served as book editor for the Austin American-Statesman. As he neared retirement, Holt resumed his musical activities as a bandleader and composer. He died in Green Valley, Arizona, on March 17, 2009.
