Bartholomew Thing (1681/82-1738), wealthy general storekeeper and entrepreneur, was born in Exeter, N.H., one of seven children of Capt. Jonathan Thing ( - ) and Mary Gilman Thing ( - ). He married Abigail Coffin ( - ) in 1705; after her death in 1771, he married the widow Sarah Little Kent (1683-1754), by whom he had one daughter, Mary (1713-1789), who later became the wife of the Rev. Nicholas Gilman (1708-1748). Thing served for several years as a selectman; as town clerk of Exeter, 1729 to 1737; as justice of the peace, 1734; and as a representative in the New Hampshire legislature, 1727 to 1728 and 1731 to 1735.
