Dr. J.W. Humber was an alumnus of Wake Forest College (Class of 1917). He served as an Assistant in Anatomy at Wake Forest College, 1916-17; as Superintendent of Southern Pacific General Hospital, San Francisco, 1927-38; as a specialist in cancer research; and as co-discoverer of the Coffey-Humber treatment for cancer.
