Gortz, Carl A., 1844-1881

Carl A. Gortz (b. 1844-d. October 30, 1881, Lena Delta, Russia) was a crew member of the USS Jeannette which was crushed by ice and sank June 6, 1881 in the Arctic Sea north of Siberia while undertaking an expedition to find the "Polar Sea". The cruise had originated at San Francisco, CA on July 8, 1879. Originally Gortz was buried with other crew members just north of Bulun on the Lena River delta, but his body was later retrieved and reburied in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, New York.
