Resident of Columbia, Tenn.; attorney, Civil War soldier, politician, reformer, and leader of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church; elected District Attorney General in 1870; conducted unsuccessful campaigns for governor, 11th Circuit judge, U.S. House of Representatives, and state senator between 1882 and 1901; early Tennessee proponent of prohibition.
