Helen Raulston (1909-1985), a native of Elizabethton, Tenn., went to work for American Bemberg in 1929 and was laid off in 1932.
American Bemberg Corporation, affiliated with the German rayon giant Vereinigte Glanzstoff Fabriken (VGF), began operating a rayon plant in Elizabethton, Tenn., in 1926. The companion Glanzstoff plant, owned by VGF and operated by American Glanzstoff Corporation, opened in 1928. It became North American Rayon Corporation (NARC) in 1934. In 1948, NARC was purchased by Beaunit Mills and, after a succession of transfers, continues to operate under the name North American Rayon. The American Bemberg plant ceased operations in 1974.
