Hide Profile
Edward D. Halbert (b. 1846) was a sheep rancher in Tulare County (Calif.). He came to California from Missouri (1873) and later settled in the Porterville district of Tulare County (1881) where he pastured 800 sheep on more than 1200 acres along Deer Creek. Halbert married Ellen Rhodes, the daughter of a neighbor. Another local sheep rancher, Spencer Fay, who is represented by Holt Atherton collection MSS 2 .F282, married Mrs. Halbert's sister. Halbert purchased land from Fay (1888), and from James L. Hathaway (1883). He also acquired homestead land from the U.S. government. Halbert was half-owner of the Minnie Ellen Mine in the Globe District (1897-1901) but gave this property up to devote his full energies to his ranch properties.
