In 1983-84, in the course of research on changing patterns in the use of time in Britain, Jonathan Gershuny, then a Research Fellow in the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex, conducted a survey of how people used their leisure time. The survey work was undertaken by Social & Community Planning Research.
