Howard James became president seven years after the company's incorporation. His incoming and outgoing correspondence covers primarily the following items: inventories of equipment, personnel changes, land purchases, equipment specifications, operation of the company store, the Whitefish plant, working conditions, wage rates and the 1909 strike by IWW Local #384, the 1910 embezzlement case of J.T. Peacha, Jr., box factories, sash and door factories, and the firm's tie treating plant. James was succeeded by L.C. Gilman as president of the Somers Lumber Company.
