Vivian Gaboury was born in Stanwood, WA in 1906. She arrived in Clallam County, WA in 1929 with her husband, Harvey, and son, Fred, when they moved onto a stump farm near the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. She had been a teacher so she was very involved in public education, organizing the Parent Teacher Association of Mount Pleasant. After becoming friends with one of the leaders of the Puget Sound Co-operative Colony, Mrs. Gaboury became a member of the Clallam County Club of the Communist Party. Over the years she was very active in the International Woodworkers of America (IWA), spearheading the construction of the public Olympic Memorial Hospital and helping with the establishment of the Peninsula Community College in Port Angeles. She was active in defending the 17 Communist Party leaders indicted under the infamous Smith Act and fellow Party members, Don and Mary Wheeler, dairy farmers that had been targeted for Cold War persecution. During the 1950's and 1960's, she organized several local events to educate and agitate against atmospheric nuclear testing and world peace. By the 1970's, she served as a lobbyist in Olympia, WA for several years editing a legislative newsletter covering the legislative sessions in Washington State. Vivian Gaboury passed away on July 20, 1999.
