John, Archbishop of Chicago and Minneapolis, 1898-1982.

Archbishop John (Garklavs) was born in Latvia, ordained a priest in 1936 and elected Bishop of Riga and All Latvia in 1942. He was deported to Germany as a laborer in 1944. In 1949 he came to the United States, was appointed Bishop of Detroit and Cleveland, and became Archbishop of Chicago and Minneapolis in 1957. He retired in 1970.
