John Thomas Hanley was a civil engineer in the Midwest. He earned his master's degree in civil engineering from Dartmouth College in 1948. During the 1950s, Hanley was a Lieutenant in the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project (AFSWP) where he worked as a civil engineer. From 1960 to 1961, Hanley was an instructor in civil engineering at the University of Illinois. Hanley worked on the Minnesota Experimental City (MXC) project during the 1960s with University of Minnesota professor Walter Viverett. Hanley was also the president of Fowler-Hanley, Inc., an engineering firm, in the 1970s.
