John Thomas Hoggard was a soldier, physician, banker, educator, politician and businessman. He was Chairman of New Hanover County Board of Education from 1935-1952. He also was instrumental in the founding of Wilmington College, later the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. John Hoggard served as president of the College from 1952-1958 and Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1958-1965. Under his leadership, Wilmington College grew from a small local junior college to a four-year state institution of higher education. He helped to organize the Morris Plan Bank of Wilmington, NC and served as its vice-president. He was the local chairman, Board of Directors of NCNB. Some of his other business interests included: founding and serving as President of the New Hanover Housing Corporation; Founder of Tom's Drug Company; partner in Hoggard Brothers, Aulander, NC; Director of Cooperative Savings and Loan Association of Wilmington, North Carolina.
