Sylvester K. Stevens graduated from Penn State in 1926 with a degree in history, beginning his master's thesis and taking a graduate assistantship that same year. He was a member of the faculty of the Department of History until 1937, at which time he was appointed Pennsylvania State Historian in 1937. In 1956 he was named executive director of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. As executive director, he oversaw the establishment of Operation Heritage, the effort by the Commission to install placards at recognized historic sites throughout Pennsylvania. He also oversaw the construction of the William Penn Memorial Museum and Archives in Harrisburg, which was completed in 1964. He retired as executive director in 1972, and died on 16 January 1974.
