LeGrand Guerry was born in Florence, South Carolina on February 3, 1873. He graduated from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and then attended the University of Georgia Medical College. He received his medical degree in 1896. After completing his internship at City Hospital in Augusta, Georgia and serving as a demonstrator of anatomy at the University of Georgia Medical College, Dr. Guerry returned to South Carolina in 1900. He established a private general medical practice in Columbia, but after three years limited his practice to surgery. Dr. Guerry was a charter member of the American College of Surgeons, a charter diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, a fellow of the American Surgical Association, a fellow of the Southern Surgical Association (he also served as treasurer, vice president, and president), a member of the American Medical Association, and served as president to both the South Carolina Medical Association and the Columbia Medical Society. Dr. Guerry was considered a pioneer in surgery, and his numerous published works were acclaimed by his colleagues. Among the many honors received by Dr. Guerry are an honorary Phi Beta Kappa from the University of the South, and honorary doctorates from the University of the South, the University of South Carolina, and the University of Georgia. An addition to the Columbia Hospital was named in his honor, and the hospital also has a bronze bust of him. Dr. Guerry married Annie Elizabeth Hawkins and had four children. His hobbies included hunting, gardening, and collecting books. Dr. Guerry died in 1947.
