Raleigh, Marie.
Marie Raleigh was an aunt of Dieter Hankel, who, along with other family members living in Berlin, wrote to Raleigh during the years 1931-1959. These letters are addressed to Mrs. Raleigh at various addresses including Los Angeles, Shanghai, and New Orleans. Dieter Hankel studied at the Lehrerbildungsanstalt, a teachers' university in Esslinger. He was a member of the Hitler-Jugend, was captured as a lieutenant in Hitler's army near the English Channel, and was then held in England as a prisoner of war. After the war, he and his family suffered economic hardships, and Raleigh sent them food and clothing.
