The Director was responsible for preparing entrance exams, scheduling classes and field work, assigning instructors, and counseling students.

The Director's Office was established in 1905 by the dean and terminated in 1918. Despite the death of Dean William Howard Brett in August 1918, Tyler's title remained director. In 1925 Tyler finally was named dean.
