Hide Profile

Charles H. Fulmer was born on Jan. 23, 1833 in Washington, D.C. In 1844 he was sent to Georgetown College, where he studied classics until entering the Society of Jesus at the Frederick (Md.) Novitiate on Aug. 10, 1847. After completing his noviceship and two more years of study at Frederick, Fulmer returned to Georgetown to teach in 1853, followed by three years at the recently established St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia, Pa. Fulmer then studied theology at Georgetown, Louvain, and the new Boston Scholasticate before being ordained to the priesthood in 1861. For the next 17 years Fr. Fulmer was professor, prefect of studies, or minister at several Jesuit establishments, including Georgetown University, the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., and Boston College. When his health began to fail in 1878 he was sent to the Church of St. Mary of the Sacred Heart, Boston, where he became superintendent of the parochial school for boys. Under his guidance the school grew in both size and quality, but he was forced to retire when his heart condition made him unable to perform his duties. He died at St. Mary's on Sept. 26, 1880.
