The State Library Extension Service was established by a legislative act in 1929 that also gave the Board of Regents of the Museum of New Mexico authority to appoint the Service's director (1929 Laws of N.M., Chp. 199, Sec. 1-6). In 1941 a legislative act established the State Library Commission and gave it authority to appoint the Service's director and coordinate library services in communities throughout the state (1941 Laws of N.M., Chp. 129, Sec. 1-6). In 1961 a legislative act replaced the State Library Extension Service with the State Library and replaced the Service's Director with the State Librarian (1961 Laws of N.M., Chp. 126, Sec. 1-12). The same 1961 legislative act established the function of the State Library Commission as an advisory board to the State Library. In 1977 a legislative act established the Educational Finance and Cultural Affairs Department and placed the State Library within that Department, where it was also called the Library Division (1977 Laws of N.M., Chp. 246, Sec. 1- 10). In 1980 a legislative act abolished the Educational Finance and Cultural Affairs Department, established the Office of Cultural Affairs, and transferred the State Library to that Office, where it was also called the Library Division (1980 Laws of N.M., Chp. 151, Sec. 1-24). The State Library is responsible for administering grants-in-aid, encouraging local library service, and administering a state library system.
