Robert Eugene Messick was born on May 1, 1941 in Shelby, North Carolina. He attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1959 to 1966. During these years he was active in the College Union. In May 1966 he received a bachelor's degree in product design. Upon graduation he received an appointment to the North Carolina State University School of Design as an instructor of product design for the 1966 - 1967 academic year. The appointment was renewed for the 1967 - 1968 year. Messick began designing and producing multimedia presentations in connection with the campus theater. He was the founder and first director of the Intermedia Program at Thompson Theater from 1968 - 1969. His 1969 - 1970 appointment as theater assistant technician was terminated early. After leaving North Carolina State University, Messick accepted a teaching position in the School of Design at Cornell University, where he remained for several years.
