After serving in U.S. Army Military Intelligence in 1956-58, he taught French and comparative literature at Dartmouth College, Northwestern University, and the University of Minnesota before attaining a full professorship at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, in 1977. He married Ellen Wood in 1962; the couple had two children.
