Alexander McCrie Duncan (1837-1915) was the son of William Duncan, a native of Scotland who immigrated to Georgia in 1818. Alexander attended Springfield Academy in Effingham County, Georgia, with his younger brother, William Duncan, Jr. In 1859 and 1860, Alexander clerked with his father's company, Duncan & Johnston, a firm of factors and commission merchants. In 1859 he joined the Georgia Hussars and served as their treasurer, secretary, and Quartermaster Sergeant from 1859 until he was promoted to 2nd Lt., Junior, Co A, Georgia Hussars (also known as Co F, Jeff Davis Legion Cavalry) in 1861. Alexander was stationed at Fort Pulaski in 1861 as part of the garrison defending the fort from the Union forces. In 1863, Duncan was promoted to 1st Lt., a position he held until 1872. Following the war, he resumed clerking with Duncan & Johnston, as well as with the O.S.S. Company of Savannah. Alexander McCrie Duncan wrote a concise history of the Georgia Hussars entitled, The Roll of officers and members of the Georgia Hussars, which was published by the Morning News in Savannah, Georgia in 1906.
