Yale University. Council of Masters.

Hide Profile

Yale University's residential colleges, modeled after those at Cambridge and Oxford, were conceived in the 1920s and designed to recapture the intimate collegiate atmosphere of an earlier time when class sizes small. The Council of Masters was established in 1932, the year the first residential colleges opened their doors. The first masters were appointed before the colleges were built, and as the Committee of Quadrangles, were instrumental in forming early policies regarding the colleges. The council consists of the masters, or administrative heads, of the residential colleges. Ex-officio members include the university president, provost, dean of Yale College, associate dean of Yale College and associate dean for student affairs. The Council makes recommendations to the university president in matters of policy concerning the residential colleges. It also serves as the committee of control in affairs concerning two or more residential colleges.
