Local chapter of a national service and research society for professional educators.
In 1922 a handful of male students and professors formed an educational fraternity called Padeia. The membership immediately petitioned Phi Delta Kappa, a national fraternity of educators, for permission to form a local chapter. In May 15, 1924, Padeia was replaced by the Alpha Theta Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa (PDK). Later, the Alpha Theta Chapter became known as the University of North Dakota Chapter. The goals in PDK were and still are to promote research, leadership, and service in education. Membership now includes men and women and is limited to "professional educators of good character." The chapter's headquarters are in the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of North Dakota.
