Born Mar. 4, 1895 in Bronx, N.Y.; Yiddish dialect comic writer and cartoonist; created his first daily comic strip in 1913; drew various strips for Hearst's Evening journal (1915-17); drew strips and wrote weekly illustrated column for New York evening world and Sunday world (1923-31), and King Features Syndicate (1931-46); lived in Hollywood during much of the 1920s, and moved permanently in 1932; was a screenwriter for Republic Studios; wrote newspaper column Dear dollink and acted as advisor for radio show adaptation of his strip, That's my pop; a heart attack in 1945 led Gross to greatly reduce his writing and drawing; died Nov. 28, 1953.
