Udell, Budd
Budd Udell was born on April 4, 1934 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. From 1958 to 1961 he was the Composer and Arranger for the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. From 1962 to 1963 he was the Assistant Director of Bands at Indiana University, where he obtained a Masters in Music Education degree in 1965. From 1963 to 1970 he was the Director of Bands and a faculty member at West Virginia University. In 1972 he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Composition from the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music (CCM), after which he served as Assistant Dean until 1974. He was executive secretary of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) from 1974 to 1977. In 1977 he came to the University of Florida and served as chair of the Music Department. He returned to the classroom in 1985 to serve as Area Coordinator of Theory and Composition and Graduate Coordinator and Advisor. He served as President of the Florida Association of Schools of Music from 1981 to 1983 and as President of the Florida State Music Teachers Association from 1985 to 1987. From 1981-1991 and then again from 1996-2004 he was the Music Director and Conductor of the Gainesville Civic Chorus. One of his compositions heard regularly on the University of Florida campus is "Florida Chimes." This is the tune which sounds each quarter hour from the UF carillon. From 2001 to 2002 Udell was the interim chair of the new UF Department of Theatre and Dance. He retired in the year 2002. Budd Udell passed away on February 3, 2006.
