J. Joaquín Fraxedas is a lawyer in Orlando, Fla. who immigrated from Cuba to the U.S. at the age of 10.
In 1993, St. Martin's Press published his fictional account of Cuban refugees crossing the strait between Cuba and Florida. It is, allegedly, the first instance of a major publisher simultaneously issuing bilingual editions (Spanish and English) of the same work. In 1994 he presented the original manuscript of the novel to the UCF Libraries.
