James McLaurin was an early pioneer, who arrived in Australia in 1838. He worked as a station manager in New South Wales and overlanded cattle to Adelaide and Melbourne. He visited the Victorian Goldfields in 1852. He was elected a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1872.
