Joseph Bridgham (1845-1915) assembled one of the world's most comprehensive butterfly collections. Initially an architect educated at Brown University, he eventually became a natural history artist, with commissions from the U.S. government and institutions such as Columbia College (N.Y.), for which he illustrated North American flowers.
