The Alaska Festival of Music came into existence in 1956 when Mary Hale of Anchorage urged a number of people in the music world to help develop the musical movement in the region and to bring to Alaska some of the world's greatest music. Its organizers sought to develop the musical movement in the region and to bring to Alaska some of the world's greatest music. Among those invited to the area were Robert Shaw, Julius Hereford, John Westman, and Robert Gerle.
