The Harvard Medical Center was originally incorporated on Sept. 26, 1956. Its chief objective was to help raise funds for Harvard Medical School and associated teaching hospital purposes. With the successful completion of this fundraising effort, the original purpose of the Center was achieved and it was dissolved on August 30, 1971. The Center was reactivated in 1974 by Robert H. Ebert, Dean of the Harvard Medical School. In this second phase, the goals of the Center were to provide a forum for exchange of information, to address issues and problems of common concern, and to advance teaching and research through collaborative efforts of the affiliated institutions.
