Rancher; Walter L. Vail, Edward's brother, purchased the Empire Ranch and Edward joined him in 1879. Walter also owned the Total Wreck Mining and Milling Company and employed Edward as an assayer. Edward supervised the family ranches and later purchased his own ranch near Rosemont, Ariz. He was also active in local politics and held various county offices. His reminiscences were published in local papers.
